Twitter kills off certain TV apps

Twitter is one of the worlds largest social networks. So why is the company killing off three of its biggest platforms?

Twitter, today, announced that the company was killing its Android TV, Roku, and Xbox app. To be fair, none of these apps are particularly important to the company. The company has long focused on mobile and desktop usage. These apps are more or less just vehicles to see a feed or stream. Leaving a tweet is non-existent on the Xbox and the other apps serve very little purpose as well. It’s safe to say that mobile platforms aren’t going anywhere, however, so no need to worry.

Twitter, recently, has come under fire for new rules related to their API’s.  There doesn’t appear to be a correlation between these retired apps and API rules.  The new rules, however, will affect third-party clients.  This decision, however, most likely comes down to cost.  Apps aren’t cheap and there is no use in supporting apps for platforms that have low engagement.  Perhaps a third party will come in to fill the void.  But unless that happens, you’ll be stuck sending your Tweets the old fashioned way; with your phone.
