AMC Theaters Launches MoviePass Competitor

MoviePass’ all-you-can-eat subscription just got a bit of competition from an unlikely source, and it seems like a pretty good deal.

When MoviePass was reborn last year with its $9.95 all-you-can-eat package, many people scoffed, including AMC Theaters president Adam Aron.  Speaking on behalf of his theater chain, he exclaimed that MoviePass was not welcome and that it would essentially kill the value of a movie ticket.  Well, times have changed apparently, as AMC is launching a new subscription service that actually might be worth a look.

The package is called AMC Stubs A-List, a variant of AMC Stubs, the reward service that gives you points for your purchases.  The idea is simple.  For $19.95 a month, you can see up to 3 movies a week at any participating AMC theater.  What makes the program so appealing compared to the MoviePass counterpart is that you can watch any movie regardless of format.  Currently MoviePass restricts you to one 2D movie a day.  A-List will let you not only watch 2D, but IMAX and 3D as well.  Further more, unlike MoviePass, you can also see the same movie more than once.

Depending on your preferred theater, this could be a great deal.  But there are a few considerations to keep in mind.  First, this will only work at AMC theaters, so if you don’t live near an AMC or if you enjoy flexibility in choosing your theater, MoviePass might be for you.  Second, there is a three month commitment so don’t expect to use it once and forget it.  On the other hand, you can use A-List with AMC’s app to book tickets online and reserve tickets for future showings; something you can’t do on MoviePass.  And A-List will also give you a 10% concessions discount on top of the already good benefits you get with Premiere.

A-List is expected to roll out on the 26th of this month (June).  And if you’ve been considering MoviePass but can’t stand the restrictions or if you’re concerned about the company’s longevity, this might be a good alternative.  Regardless, having a choice in package is a fantastic idea.  We will have a full review for you once the service goes live.
