Samsung and Apple have been duking things out over patent and trade-dress infringement. Apple just won the battle.
In what is the battle that just won’t end, Apple defeated Samsung in court today over alleged patent infringements stemming from Samsung’s early designs for their smartphones. The jury verdict handed Apple the win and awarded the company $539 million in damages.
For those unfamiliar with the case, Apple sued Samsung back in April 2011 for trade-dress and patent violations. Although Apple initially won both cases, there was a lot of back and fourth on the dollar amount. Apple initially wanted $1 billion but could not get that amount regardless of the jury’s verdict. The first verdict awarded Apple their desired amount but Judge Lucy Koh vacated that verdict and reduced the damages. Another trial found Samsung guilty and awarded Apple $120 million. Since then, there has been some back and forth until the most recent trial which began last week.
The Supreme Court sided with Samsung and sent the case back down to the District Court for retrial. With this verdict, the trial should finally be over.
