DirecTV NOW expands DVR functionality again.

The over-the-top cord-cutting service has been growing, and they did it again today for Android customers.

Last week, DirecTV NOW launched a public beta for iOS, Apple TV, and Chromecast customers. The public beta in question allows customers to get 20 hours of DVR recording and the addition of a third stream. But if you were an Android user who’s been wanting these features, sadly, you were out of luck. That was until today.

DirecTV NOW launched its updated app platform for Android and Android TV customers today. As of now, and with a simple app update, you can take advantage of DVR functionality and a third stream if you so choose. A third stream is an additional $5 a month while the DVR functionality is free but an upgrade is coming for just $10 a month that will allow you to record 100 hours of programing while extending the expiration date to 90 days.   The new app also features a new look with trending and currently broadcasting material up front and center.  Also, more on demand content has been added and subtle improvements have been made to just about everything else.

DirecTV NOW hasn’t been a run-away success but the company has held steady in the over-the-top market. The company competes against services like Sling TV, Playstation Vue, and others. While both Vue and Sling have been around a lot longer, NOW has been playing some major catchup with this update bringing the service on par with others. When the service first launched, it was buggy to say the least. The company had previously lagged behind in features such as DVR, a staple of the other services. However, a little time and energy and now the company seems competitive.  And with a market that is constantly on the rise, this is a much needed update.  Let’s hope the company continues this upwards momentum.  Stay tuned.
